The term eSports is a neologism stands for professional video game competitions.

Unknown to many for years, these competition have become mainstream during and after the pandemic.

In 2020 the audience for eSports reached over 443 million worldwide. That’s more than the viewers of American football and rugby combined.

As anticipated, the pandemic has probably accelerated this progress. During the lockdown months we have seen an unprecedented (and accidental) adoption of eSports by broadcasters, leagues and athletes looking to engage fans. Moreover, eSports have suddenly become popular and legitimised in an unpredictable and profound way. It is indeed an acceleration of what is most lokely to be a long-term trend. Gaming and broadcast gaming have been growing for years in terms of revenue, reach and relevance.

Impact

With time, the popularity of eSports should come as no surprise. Probably today’s popularity is not immediately sustainable, nor is its growth rate. With the demise of Covid the fervour of eSports will decline, ratings will drop and revenue will fall. However, Covid will have permanently increased the overall economic and cultural trajectory of eSports. And in the future there will be more revenue, more funding, more viewers and better distribution.
